Loy Krathong Festival is the festival you should not miss in Samui!
Loy Krathong is a festival that always falls on the night of the full moon on month 12th of the Thai lunar calendar. It is a famous Thai festival, and there is beautiful activity
at night. Delving first into the Thai expression, “Loy” means to float, while “Krathong” refers to the floating container itself. Ideally, make a Krathong out of round sections of the banana tree, and then people will float it with candles. Many believe it will grant their wishes because candlelight refers to holy and blessings.
This festival is as well carried out by the Thais as the Songkran Festival, on Thai New Year’s Day. Both require the presence of water. The Krathong’s floating away symbolizes letting go of all hatred, anger, and negative things.
On the night of Loy Krathong, Pru Chaweng is one of the most popular places in Samui to go enjoy all the activities, night market, and just get the sense of how the locals are celebrating during this festival. People wade into the water to release tiny ‘Krathong,’ or boats that – hopefully – float far off into the water together with all their bad lucks and sorrows of the past year.
You can join the celebration in Samui during the Loy Krathong festival. We are sure that this festival will leave you with many happy memories. Just make sure you bring along a Krathong with you.
Besides the Loy Krathong Festival, there are so many attractive places and activities in Koh Samui throughout the year.
